The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced 'show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee'), also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, is a serene and vigilant breed that dates back over 3,000 years. Once revered by the Aztecs as a sacred dog of the gods, today the Xolo is a devoted companion and alert watchdog. This breed comes in three sizes—toy, miniature, and standard—and two varieties: hairless and coated. The hairless Xolo has tough, smooth skin, while the coated variety boasts a short, flat coat. Their colors range from black and gray-black to red, liver, and bronze. Known for their thoughtful and intelligent expressions, Xolos often have a wrinkled forehead when deep in thought. Despite their elegant and graceful appearance, they are surprisingly strong and rugged. Highly adaptable, they thrive in various environments and require moderate exercise. With a lifespan of up to 15 years, these dogs form deep bonds with their families and excel in loyalty and protectiveness. Their low grooming needs and minimal shedding make them an excellent choice for those seeking a unique, affectionate, and low-maintenance companion.
